Why is it so difficult to get a good coffee at a fancy-pants coffee franchise?
I like my coffee. I take it white, or sometimes black.
I asked for a flat white at a coffee place last week, and I was asked for my name.
I want to drink the coffee, not get introduced to it!
But, apparently one cannot make a coffee until a name is entered into the computer system.
OK, I supply my name and order. It is entered onto a touchscreen PC and whizzed over the network to land on another computer not 36 inches further along the counter.
It is probably automatically inserted into the barista’s Outlook task list - I hope it has got a deadline attached.
Several minutes later, after much remonstrating and futzing of spoons, my coffee is ready and my name is called.
At the counter I am introduced to my coffee. It's beautiful! The barista has done a wonderful job of inscribing pretty patterns in the crema.
Artful.... but the coffee is cold :(
What is this trend of wasted technology and frivolities?
Do you really need a couple of PCs and a local network to pass an order to the person standing next to you?
How much training does it take to get the staff to use the technology?
How much training does it take to get the pretty patterns inscribed in the crema?
How good would the coffee be if all that effort was put into training the staff to use the coffee machine?
Well, at least it might be hot.
